Gideon Kendall was
born on December 12, 1966 in Austin, Texas, and lived on a commune in rural
West Virginia between the ages of 5 and 12. With an actor/director father
and an artist/dancer mom, he was fortunate to be brought up in an environment
that nurtured creativity. His mother instilled in him a love of drawing
at an early age. She left a ballpoint pen in his crib, and Gideon covered
his sheets with drawings of cars, roads, and buildings. He developed an
equal love for Dr. Seuss, M.C. Escher, Robert Crumb, Durer, Daumier, and
superhero comics. He graduated high school in the Philadelphia area and
then moved to New York City to study art. |

He graduated from The
Cooper Union for Science and Art with a BFA in 1989. For the past 15 years
he has been working as an artist, illustrator, animation designer, and
musician in Brooklyn.
In 2001 Gideon published his first children’s book; “Littlebat’s
Halloween Story”, written by Diane Mayr and published by Albert
Whitman & Co.
His other books for children include "Dino
Pets" by Lynn Plourde
(Dutton, summer 2007), "Rabbits, Rabbits Everywhere" by ? (Charlesbridge
spring 2007). In 2006 Gideon illustrated "The
Caveman's Pregnancy Companion", a how-to book for dads-to-be,
written by David Port and John Ralston and published by Sterling Press.
He has been production designer (backgrounds) for the duration of the series “Pepper
Ann”, a Saturday morning cartoon show on ABC. Until recently, Gideon
was production designer (along with other very talented folks including
Robert Kopecky and John Allemand) for “The Kids Next Door” on
the Cartoon Network created by the fabulous Tom Warburton, which has completed
a run of six seasons and a DVD movie. He learned the ropes of animation
and background design at J.
J. Sedelmaier Productions where he worked from
1995-98.
He has illustrated articles and record covers for companies such as Children’s
Television Workshop, Scholastic, Geffen Records, HEEB Magazine, and College
Music Journal.
Although a newcomer to the field, Gideon has also worked under the guidance
of Sean Ramsay Productions on several museum exhibition projects.
He has shown his artwork in several NYC galleries including PS 122, HERE
Gallery, and Ethan Cohen Fine Arts.
His rock band, Fake Brain has released several independent
CD’s and
tours sporadically throughout the U.S. The Band recently performed a multimedia
rock opera entitled "Dr. Wei-Wei & The Fake Brain" to
sell-out crowds in lower Manhattan. There are plans for a movie version
as well. In addition to Fake Brain, Gideon is also in The Organ
Donors (featuring the Percodettes) and Cooling
Pies, which features
the music of the incredibly talented Kevin
Lacroix, aka Frank Atom.
Gideon's hobbies include cooking, eating lots of Korean and Mexican food, playing
Ultimate Frisbee, and exploring Brooklyn on bicycle.
In October of 1998 Gideon married Julie Peppito, a sculptor, painter, jewelry
maker, and playground designer. They share a home and studio in the Kensington
neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.
